How to name your business
One of the decisions which takes longest when you setup you company is what do you call it? Many people are caught between several names or have a ‘namer’s block’ before they find their perfect name. So what can you name your business?
There is a huge domain name market out there which means a lot of domain names are gone. With pretty much everyone on the Internet these days, you will probably want to have a website, and the domain name should reflect the name of your business. This means you are usually left with two options – something ultra creative, and possibly a bit wild and wacky, or something straightforward and descriptive.
Creative?
The advantages to a creative name are that they can be very catchy and catch people’s interest when they hear the name. If it’s not too wacky, it can also be quite easy to remember. A combination of these two factors mean that you have good branding power for your company.
However, sometimes a creative name doesn’t give away what the company actually does. For your website, search engines are also starting to put a lot more weight on the domain name, so if you have a company name which does not describe what you do, it may be harder to get good rankings in one of the major search engines.
Straightforward?
Straightforward name clearly indicate what your company does. If they are direct, they can be easy to remember. If the name is a good keyword or keyphrase and you also own the relevant domain name, you may find it easier to get good rankings in the top search engines.
However, the lack of creativity in the name may put some people off. Because the name is generic, it may also be difficult to remember in the long run – english has many similar words and they can often get confused and muddled.
Both types of name can be very successful in the long run and you should pick the sort of name which you feel most comfortable with and the name that you feel will most suits the need of your company. Once people know your company name, the actual name becomes less of an issue.
