Simple things can save the most money

Sometimes the simplest of things actually can help you save the most money. Making minor changes to your life can help you cut down on your outgoings without reducing your lifestyle. Here at MoneyTowers.com, we have come up with up top 15 minor changes that we have made to help us save more money!

1. Make your own tea/coffee. We have a serious caffeine habit at MoneyTowers and we are keeping the local coffee shop in business! Making our own tea and coffee could save up to £20 each per week – that’s a whopping £1,040 a year!

2. Using a film hire service instead of going to the cinema. You can make you own popcorn and drinks and many, many nights in for the same price as going to the cinema.

3. Walking as much as possible. For small journeys, instead of taking the car, walk. It keeps you fit and reduces fuel bills.

4. Buy a water jug with a water filter. The water is just as good as the bottled stuff but it’s much cheaper! We find that one filter lasts a couple of months, so the outlay is well worth it.
5. Go to the local library. Instead of buying books, borrow them.

6. Take your own lunch to work. Not only is it usually healthier, but it saves a fortune. If you spend £5 per day on lunch, that’s £25 a week, which equates to £1,300 a year!

7. Buy generic aspirin, ibuprofen etc. It’s normally the same stuff as the brand, just much cheaper.

8. If you must use a credit card, use one which gives you something back – there’s plenty of choice, from cashback to airmiles.

9. If you have outstanding balances on your credit cards, pay off as much as you can each month. If you tend to only pay the minimum, try and pay a little extra. See our guide on snowballing to help get rid of the debt.

10. If you are guilty of impulse purchasing, the next time you get the urge to buy something, write it down on a bit of paper and walk out of the shop. Wait 24 hours and then decide if you really do need it. If you decide you do, wait another 24 hours. If the urge is still there, then go ahead and buy – you’ll find your spending splurges should be reduced!

11. Turn down the heater on your water heater by 1 or 2 degrees. You won’t notice the difference but your finances will! And it has the added bonus of making your ‘greener’.

12. Get your news from the internet and not newspapers. Save money AND save trees!

13. Sell your clutter on places like eBay, or give it away on Freecycle. Just because you don’t want it doesn’t mean someone else won’t, and you’ll make some money while you’re at it.

14. Get rid of Sky/Cable etc and stick with Freeview. Use the time you would have spent to get out of the house, read a book or learn something new.

15. Try and buy your groceries from local sources. Not only is the produce often fresher, but it also tends to cost less and taste great!

So that’s it – our top 15 small changes that can reap huge financial rewards. If you’ve got any suggestions for other changes, we would love to hear from you, so please send us an email!
