The art of haggling

Haggling is an art that seems to come to some people naturally. Haggling is a skill worht having because it helps to save money by negotiating the price down – typical things to haggle on cars, homes and market produce, to name but a few. As you get more skilled in haggling, it will become easier and you’ll hopefully get better at getting those prices reduced!

There are four major parts to haggling to get the best possible deal:

1. Determine what price you want to pay. You may want to consider a spending range – aim for the lowest price in your range, but know that anything in your range would be acceptable.

2. When you find something that you want, don’t look too keen – if you let your emotions show and make a big deal out of the sale, you are less likely to get a good price as the person will see how much you want the goods. A simple question such as “How much do you want for this item?” will start the bargaining process off. Conversely, if you are selling a product, tell the buyer, “Make me an offer!”

3. The next step is making a counter offer. Don’t rush this stage – take your time. Be comfortable with silence – give the vendor time to think over your offer and respond.

4. Be prepared to walk away. If the price is not within the price range you set yourself, say “no thanks” and walk away. Sometimes, people will lower their price when they see you walk off. If you hover over the item, they won’t reduce the price as they will hope you will come back later.
